Sunday 75min Restorative
Jun
6
8:00 PM20:00

Sunday 75min Restorative

Give yourself a luxury that will lengthen and relax your muscles and change your body's response to stress! The antidote to stress is relaxation. Our bodies need deep rest -- collapsing on the couch in front of the tv is not deep rest! Restorative yoga helps the body and mind relax, allowing us to regain equilibrium. There is very little movement; poses are held anywhere from five to 15 minutes, but every part of your body is completely supported by props. Truly anyone can practice, and will benefit from, restorative yoga. This class will also incorporate some pranayama breathing, meditation, and a little yin stretching to keep the fascia pliant and joints mobile.

A little more about restorative: We spend most of our lives in the "fight-or-flight" sympathetic nervous system. Our bodies do not make the distinction between the small stresses of daily life (being late for work), a more serious personal crisis, or a life-threatening situation -- in all cases, bodies respond with the release of adrenaline, cortisol, and other hormones. Heart rate, blood pressure, and muscle tension are all increased. The body also shuts down systems that are deemed non-essential, such as digestion, elimination, growth, repair, and reproduction. This is great if we are being chased by a bear, but in most cases our bodies overreact to the chronic stress of our lives.

Pitta Pacifying Yoga and Breath Practices (In Studio & Livestream)
Jun

Pitta Pacifying Yoga and Breath Practices (In Studio & Livestream)

The Summer season is characterized by pitta qualities - hot, sharp, and intense among others. A basic tenet of Ayurveda is “like increases like and opposites balance.” In this pitta pacifying practice, we will invite more compassion, acceptance, and ease by engaging in a grounding flow, cooling breath techniques, and conscious relaxation (yoga nidra) to integrate all of the benefits of our time together. Simple movements and breathing exercises will be offered for you to apply as the heat turns up!

Annamaria will be offering a Pitta Ayurvedic health workshop on June 26th, "Pitta Pacifying Foods and Practices". Come get a taste of what Ayurveda has to offer in this Friday introductory class!

About Ayurveda:

Ayurveda, the science of life, is a 5,000 year old holistic system of natural healing that provides guidelines on how to live harmoniously by working with nature’s five basic elements (earth, water, fire, air, ether) to inform our lifestyle choices including food, daily and seasonal routines, and exercise. We will explore how to balance the elements present in the summer season, and practices to balance their effects so that we can have a more harmonious relationship with ourselves and our external environment.

Yoga and Ayurveda are considered to be sister sciences as they are meant to be practiced together. Yoga is the study of spirit, a science intended to cleanse the heart so that we may awaken to the Truth of who we really are. Ayurveda is the study of matter, a science guiding us towards understanding the nature of this world and all of the energies at play. Practiced together, Yoga and Ayurveda teach us how to live harmoniously in this world that is made up of matter while staying connected to our soul.

Guest Series: Bhavana and Breath-Centered Yoga

  • 2nd Story Pilates+Yoga (livestream) (map)

Join our next guest teacher Salvador Martinez for this useful and transformative class series of integrating bhavana, breath, and yoga. Take one or all three! Salvador used to teach at 2nd Story before moving to Oakland. We are delighted to have him back!

Bhavana has many meanings, but in this context bhavana is a state of visualization. In this practice, we are visualizing the object of focus in a specific manner. It is an intellectual mental process because we are imaging the object of focus in a different part of the body.

Breath-Centered Yoga is the process of engaging conscious breathing with the practice of yogic physical postures where we allow our breath to align our body. In this way what could be a purely physical exercise regimen becomes a 'holistic' one engaging body, breath, and mind. What distinguishes the teachings of yoga in this tradition is the utmost concern for the individual student's needs on all levels be that physical, energetic, mental, emotional, and spiritual.

Join Oakland-based Breath-Centered Yoga teacher Salvador Martinez for this useful and transformative workshop of integrating bhavana, breath, and yoga.

Bio:

Salvador began is Hatha Yoga practice and training in 1993, exploring a variety of disciplines such as Ashtanga-vinyasa, Iyengar, Shadow, Therapeutic, and Vinyasa. While pursuing his studies, he lived in San Francisco, London, and New York City, where he began teaching in 2008 and became an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher with the Yoga Alliance.

Salvador offers a traditional Breath-Centered Yoga practice for the individual, based on the teachings of T. Krishnamacharya and his son TKV Desikachar. It is with a profound passion that the teachings and practice are offered, clarifying its relevance of ancient wisdom to contemporary life.

2nd Story has invited three guest teachers to teach classes in February, March, and April. We are taking advantage of the Zoom platform and inviting amazing teachers from afar to teach our community. First up is Laura Bartczak teaching from California!

February 7th, 14th, and 21st at 1PM EST
The 3 Floors of the Body: roots, action, and vision

Laura's classes are inspired by Yoga, Pilates, and Qi Gong. They are infused with breath work and concepts inspired by Katonah Yoga (a practice that blends Hatha yoga and Taoist Theory) and its "body as a house" metaphor. In these classes students will dive deeper into the three levels of the body- lower, middle, and upper- and their associated elements, organs, glands, and energetic qualities. We can't wait!

Laura Bartczak is a movement and visual artist who has been leading yoga, qi gong, and art classes throughout NYC for the past 10 years, and recently relocated to LA. She holds a BFA in Dance Performance and Choreography, a Yoga Alliance Teacher Training from Yoga Vida NYC, and a Mindfulness & Trauma Informed Training through The Lineage Project. She recently completed a 50 hour Advanced Teacher Training with Love Yoga in Venice, and a Katonah Yoga Magic Square workshop with Abbie Galvin. Inspired by the energy moving practice of Qi Gong, and the stabilization of pilates, her classes encourage both effort and release.

Yin yoga is a complementary practice to our vinyasa or hatha practice. Instead of using our muscles, yin yoga asks us to get into our connective tissues- what holds our muscles and bones together. Poses are held for time to allow for a gradual release but yin should not be confused with restorative yoga. You’ll feel a lot! This profound practice is suitable for all levels of practice, including absolute beginners.

We will use props in this class. If you have yoga blocks and a bolster, great! If you don’t, grab some bed pillows, and a few blankets or towels.

The last Sunday of each month will be dedicated to a longer 75min Restorative Yoga experience!
Each month will include a rotating theme or approach to yoga, plus plenty of time for a full restorative practice.

Restorative + Foundations will have an added focus on alignment-- uncovering the right balance of effort and ease in how we hold ourselves on and off the mat. We'll spend about a half hour exploring some simple standing and seated poses; beginners will learn the basics and more experienced students will learn how to go deeper and uncover new information in poses they've done a thousand times. We'll transition to the floor and leave plenty of time for our restorative yoga practice, where alignment is also important, as a means of optimizing how our nervous system bridges our bodies and minds.
