Studio Policies & Practices

Before class: Please arrive 5-15 minutes before class begins. This gives you the opportunity to settle down and get comfortable before class. This also allows the teacher time to guide you if you need any modifications for class or have any questions. Students are welcome to arrive more than 15 minutes early, but the studio space may not yet

Late arrivals: Pre-registered students will be allowed into the class up to 5 minutes after the class starts. After the 5 minute grace period, teachers will typically turn down the buzzer and focus on teaching their class. Please arrive no later than 5 minutes after class starts to avoid losing your spot in class.

Class cancellations: Students can cancel a class reservation penalty free up to 6 hours before the class starts. This is considered an ‘early cancellation’, and the class is automatically returned to the student’s account for later use. Students can cancel by logging into mindbody, clicking, ‘my info’, then ‘my schedule’. Click ‘cancel’ next to the class you can no longer attend. The early cancellation period for private and duet sessions is 24 hours. The early cancellation period for a workshop or special event is 48 hours. Cancellation policies for a limited class series vary, so please email info@secondstorymovement for specifics.

Late cancellations and no shows: Canceling less than 6 hours before a class begins is considered a ‘late cancellation’, which results in the class being deducted from the student’s account. Early cancels are preferred, but If a student suddenly becomes ill after the early cancellation period, then please immediately cancel on mindbody and email info@secondstorymovement.com that you are sick and cannot attend class so that the class can be returned to your account. Penalty free late cancellations are offered only in the case of illness and are only provided when the student alerts the studio in a timely manner. No shows are strongly discouraged and classes will not be returned to your account if you fail to cancel the reservation before the class begins.

Additionally, monthly auto renew members are permitted four penalty free late cancellations and zero no shows per month. Each subsequent late cancellation and all no shows will result in a $5 fine.

Package expirations: All class packages have an expiration period. Please view the expiration period on the pricing page of our website. The expiration period will begin on the date of purchase, but the start date can be adjusted by emailing info@secondstorymovement.com and submitting your preferred start date. Extensions are only provided in the event of a medical issue and cannot be provided in the case of travel, scheduling issues, or difficulty getting a spot in your preferred class. If this is an issue, then please consider buying single classes, which have a one year expiration.

Waitlist policies: Students on the waitlist can be automatically added to the class up to 6 hours before the class starts, and students will receive an email or text notification alerting them that they are now in the class.

This means that students on the waitlist for a morning class may be added to the class overnight. If this is not enough lead time for you, or you do not plan to check your messages, then please remove yourself from the waitlist before bed so that another student can take the spot in class. Please note that signing up for the waitlist is a commitment to a spot in class if it becomes available. Please cancel your waitlist reservation in mindbody if your plans change and you can no longer take the class.

Students are responsible for keeping track of their class reservations and students are expected to ‘opt in’ to receiving notifications relating to account management and reminders/schedule changes either via text or email. Please check your communication settings by logging into mindbody, clicking ‘my info’, then ‘profile’. Your communication preferences are located on the left.

In the studio

Shoes: Please remove your shoes upon entering and leave them under the bench in the main practice room or in the hallway. No shoes are permitted in the practice rooms.

Phones: Please do not use your phone inside the practice rooms at 2nd Story. This is not meant to target or punish anyone, but we all need spaces where we are expected to unplug. Please avoid phone conversations in the studio, and only check messages in between classes in the prop room or hallways. If you arrive early to class, please leave your phone with your belongings on the bench and spend that time meditating, warming up, or chatting with your classmates. Your body and mind deserve your attention, and a movement class requires focus. Both of which are compromised if your phone is in view, so please turn it off and set it aside while you’re on your mat. If you have a time sensitive emergency that requires you to bring your phone or smartwatch to your mat, then please let the teacher know and take any necessary calls or messages outside of the practice rooms.

Mats + Props: The green and black studio mats are for all to use and can be located on the studio prop shelf. After class, please clean your mat and props with mat cleaner and hang the studio mat on the rack to dry.

The shelf of assorted mats labeled ‘personal mats’ belong to individuals with monthly auto renew packages. Studio mats and props are for all, and due to limited space only students with auto renew packages may store their mat at 2nd Story.

AC + fans: Window fans and ceiling fans are preferable for ventilation and air flow, but the AC will be turned on if the temperature and humidity are high. If the AC is on, then all windows in the practice room must be closed. If you are warm, please do not adjust the air conditioner and ask the teacher to turn on the AC or fans.

Common Questions

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO CLASS?
All you need are comfortable clothes to move in. Many of the classes use props but it is not required. The teacher will always suggest what props you can grab at the beginning of class. You can bring your own mat with you, or borrow one of our studio mats!

SHOULD I TAKE A PILATES OR YOGA PRIVATE?
Private sessions are a great way to familiarize yourself with the principles and terminology of pilates and yoga. They’re also an opportunity to address any specific health or movement needs in a one on one environment. Many students take a few private classes and move on to group classes, while others prefer an ongoing private practice. Let us know if you have questions about private yoga or pilates sessions at info@secondstorymovement.com or see our Private Sessions page here.

I AM NEW TO PILATES AND YOGA. WHICH CLASSES SHOULD I TAKE?

For those with little to no experience, we suggest starting with Yoga Foundations or Pilates: The Classics. Yoga Foundations provides an introduction to commonly taught yoga postures, breathing techniques, and basic yoga philosophy. Pilates: The Classics focuses on the classical Pilates exercises that students will experience in many of our other Pilates classes. Students will get a foundational understanding of the Core exercises, breathing techniques, and basic form to get the most out of each movement.

All these classes are great for beginners and for long time practitioners who seek more clarity and awareness in their movement patterns. The rest our classes on the schedule are Open Level and if those work better for your schedule you are welcome to join. All our classes are meant to be accessible for newcomers and experienced practitioners alike. Just be sure to mention to your instructor that you are new so they can offer appropriate instructions to the new students in the class.

DO YOU HAVE ANY INTRODUCTORY OFFERS FOR NEW STUDENTS?
Yes! We have a New Student Offer, which is two weeks of unlimited yoga and pilates mat classes for $49*. This is a great opportunity for new students to check out a variety of classes. The 14 day period begins when you purchase the package.

Please note that this offer applies to your first visit at 2nd Story and cannot be purchased after you’ve taken class.
